Generic Drugs

Although many generic drugs work just as well as the proprietary drugs, the bioavailability may be different. Therefore, if you are given a generic drug for the first time or if you are given a generic by a different manufacturer for the first time, it is important to be alert to changes in your child’s response to the medication. This could either be under-medication, such as a resumption of symptoms that had been controlled or over-medication where your child appears more sedated or more irritable. Very often this means altering the dose of medication and Dr. Nathanson-Lippitt should be called with this concern. Often, once the new appropriate dose is ascertained, there will be good stability as long as the medication comes from the same manufacturer. There are some generics that do not work well. We have had particular trouble with TEVA’S Lamictal and Wellbutrin and these should not be accepted.
